Before you start
- Use a soft, non-stretch measuring tape.
- Measure on bare skin, in the morning, before eating.
- Stand relaxed with feet together, and breathe out normally before reading the tape.
- Keep the tape level and snug, without pressing into the skin.
Neck
Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), with the tape sloping slightly downward to the front. Keep your head straight and look ahead.
Waist
Measure at the narrowest point, typically level with your navel. Do not suck in your stomach.
Hips (women)
Measure around the widest point of your hips and buttocks, with the tape level all the way round. Use a mirror to check.
Common mistakes
- Pulling the tape tight, which lowers the result.
- Measuring over clothes.
- Measuring at different points each time; mark the spot so you repeat it.
- Taking one reading only; measure twice and use the average.
